Half Marathon Training Take Two

Before we get into the meat of today’s post, I want to make you laugh. I hope you’ve heard of Kassem G on Youtube. If not, today is your lucky day. He is probably one of my favourite people on YouTube. I’ve been really behind on my YT subs lately and just caught up on a month of his series "California On". This is by far my favourite one of all time.

Warning: profanity, vulgarity, and all that other fun stuff

Personally, I think Tim Horton is doing an excellent job as Prime Minister...

I hope the majority of you have the same type of sense of humor as me. If not, I really hope this video didn’t make you angry :)

Now that we’ve had our daily laugh, let’s talk half marathon training for the Queen City Half!

Half Marathon Training

If you recall, I changed up my half marathon training plan halfway through during my Princess Half Marathon training. I originally started with Self’s training plan and it just wasn’t meshing with me. When I switched to Hal Higdon’s Novice 1 plan, everything just clicked. Hal’s plan worked so well with my body and schedule, I’ve decided to go with his Intermediate plan for the Queen City Half coming up in September. It incorporates more speedwork than the novice plan which is why I chose it. I’m going to SPEED with this half! I want to get as close to that 2 hour finishing time as I can.

Channeling Usain Bolt..but in endurance format. Also, I plan on posing like this as a cross the finish line. WHAT.

In order to complete the plan in its entirety, I have to start my training the week of June 25th. This cuts my LiveFit phase 3 schedule short by 2 weeks. And when push comes to shove, I’m choosing to start my half training and end LiveFit June 25th. In hindsight, I wish I would have found LiveFit earlier in the year so I could have completed the program, but that’s the reality of it. I love running way too much to shorthand myself on this half.

LiveFit is a fantastic program and I’ll probably do it again sometime in the next year or two depending on my race schedule. I welcomed the change of pace (well, not so much the no cardio aspect), can actually see some changes in my body and have noticed an increase of strength. I’ll be doing a whole review on the program for those of you who were interested in it.

I am beyond excited to get back into training mode, especially now that I’m not training in the heart of winter! Hip hip hooray for outdoor runs! Although, there will be the occasionally dreadmill training session. I actually enjoyed going to the gym and knocking out my miles while watching my shows. Especially Four Weddings. That was my crack during my last half training. Those ladies are CRAZY.

Have you used Hal Higdon’s plans for your races? I can’t say enough about the Novice 1 plan. I recommend it to EVERYONE doing their first half.

Trivia of the day: It’s Mike and I’s anniversary today! Three years consecutive, five total (we took a year break a la Ross and Rachel). I’ve got some massages lined up for us this weekend and I can’t WAIT! These muscles are begging for a massage. Both of us are newbies at massages so I’m hoping this helps loosen up my quads and calves. I seriously overdid it Monday on the quads and they’re still hurting today – not like DOMS hurting, a different kind of hurting. Not bueno. Taking it easy on the legs this week.

What a couple of good looking kids, am I right? ;)

I applaud you for even sticking with a program, I am so bad at actually doing one. Way to go! Do what works for you and in the end you will get all the results you want!
